  • Click “Get started” under “Reset this PC”
  • Choose “Remove everything”

Formatting a second disk drive with Windows

You can format a disk drive to wipe out all the data on it.

Use the following steps to format a drive:

  1. Type Control Panel in the search box.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click System and Security
  4. Under Administrative Tools, click “Create and format hard disk partitions”
  5. In the lower half of the screenRight click on the drive or partition to format and click on Format.
  6. Select the file system and set the cluster size (normally NTFS/default)
  7. Click OK to format the drive.

Note: Formatting a drive erases all data on the drive. Backup any important information before attempting to format a drive.

Note: Files can be recovered after a format by a determined individual.  It is much more difficult to zero the drive so it can’t be recovered – you basically have to run an elevated command prompt, and use one of the following commands:

format : /fs:NTFS /p:2

or run “diskpart”.  At it’s prompt (DISKPART>), type “list disk”.  It will show you a list of disks. Determine which disk is the one you want to zero.  Type “select disk 1” (or 2 or 3, whichever disk is the one you want to zero).  Now type “clean all”.  This will take a long time, and does not give a progress bar, so allocate a whole day to this task for larger disks.

Microsoft Telephone SCAM

More and more folks, including me, are experiencing the telephoneÂscamÂwhere the caller says he/she is from Microsoft and is calling about your serious computer problems.
Microsoft does not callÂpeople to help with their computer problems.  Just hang up.  Do not talk to and certainly do not provide any information to the caller.  You probably do not have any problems, but if you do the caller does not know about them.
